LIFE AT THE ARMSTRONG

Photo curtesy of Michael Kearney

This is the C. E. Armstrong Building in Clinton, Iowa. It was formerly known as the Moeszinger-Marquis Building. It was originally built by ancestors of Francie Bickelhaupt Hill whose parents are the founders of the Bickelhaupt Arboretum which surrounds the home where they lived.

The top two floors have been renovated into 8 apartments on each floor. There are two bedroom and one bedroom apartments. I am fortunate to occupy the far right corner apartemtn on the third floor. I have a view of the river......over the top of the scrap yard and on the right side of the building my computer room (second bedroom) window overlooks the South Bridge which takes you to Illinois on Hwy 30.

It is also only one block from the YWCA where I walk to every morning for aquasizes in the pool, and one block from the Clinton Public Library where go for the Clinton County Genealogical Chapter meetings on the third Saturday of each month.

My new church, The First United Methodist Church, is also one block away and catty corner from the YWCA. I now sing in the choir and will be joining the bell choir soon. I have many opportunities to volunteer there in helping with things such as serving funeral lunches or helping the various circles with there functions when it's possible. Working over the noon hour at the high school cafeteria makes it only possible to help on week ends during the winter but I have more time for that during the summer season. I also had an opportunity to play my harp for both services during the summer as the choirs don't sing during that time and various people volunteer to fill the music needs for services.

I was fortunate to be allowed to work with the HELPING HANDS program though The First United Methodist Church. It's a wonderful organization which helps people in need of work being done on their homes. Sometimes it's making a ramp but the group I was in today painted a house for a lady. I got a chance to get to know her a little bit which was nice also. The heat got to me and I ended up leaving at 1:20 p.m. bit enjoyed doing what I could. I did some scraping and then painting the trim.
The Salvation Army supported us by cooking a meal for us at 11:30, which was appreciated. This program is open to anyone in the community who would like to help.

I had an opportunity to play my harp for a womens group at Clinton Church of Christ. I was asked by one of my co-workers at the Clinton High School Cafeteria, LaRonna Heppner. She had also asked me to talk about the angelfood ministeries food program, which I did. It was nice to meet more good Christian Women. It's easy doing things for people when you believe in what you do and enjoy doing it.
